The Importance of Backing Up

I’ve heard so many horror stories lately of couple’s never receiving their wedding photos, with photographers using the excuse “my hard drive crashed” etc.  As someone who has a Mac and backs up my work constantly through Time Machine and a second external hard drive, it’s hard for me to understand how that is a valid excuse for losing someone’s photos from such an important day in their lives.  When I got married, I would have been devastated had I never received our wedding photos and I always sympathize with couple’s I hear who have had this issue.

Recently, my hard drive crashed on my brand new iMac.  Technology is a fickle friend and even if something is new, doesn’t mean it may not crash.  Luckily for me, I continuously back up my work through my Time Machine AND I back up all of my photos onto a second external hard drive.  Soon I’ll even been backing up onto online storage.  Is this overkill?  Maybe, but I’d rather be safe than sorry when it comes to my clients memories.

So, while it may be a pain in the butt, if you back up all of your work, a hard drive crash is just a blip in the road and a minor inconvenience- not a devastating loss.

Be sure to ask, whomever you hire, if and how they backup all of their work!
